Murals

Stan has been best known for his ceramic murals for over a half century. They can be found in public spaces including hotels, banks, shopping centers, churches, and industrial complexes, as well as private residences. These pieces are most often site specific, and can range in size from mini-murals (2’x2’) to large scale works multiple stories high. In recent years, with the addition of the steel frame installation system, the work can be relocated at a future time, if so desired. Permanent installations are also available. The murals are available in a variety of textures, relief styles, and glaze colors, as represented in the photos below.

California Design

Stan graduated from UCLA in 1959 with a degree in painting. After graduation, he became artist-in-residence at the Hans Sumpf Company in Madera, CA, where he was given complete creative freedom. It was during this time that some of his most iconic pieces were initially created. His work was also included in the famed Pasadena Art Museum’s California Design exhibits Eight (1962), Nine (1965) and Ten (1968). He struck out on his own in 1965, and in 1976 he authored his cult favorite book “Environmental Ceramics” about his artistic process. The mural at right is titled “Penny Arcade” and was featured in California Design / Nine in 1965. It measured 8’ x 10’ and was composed of over 200 pieces.
